Why prices differ on this route
These 574 km cross three sections: Cologne–Frankfurt (high-speed line), the Frankfurt–Mannheim/Würzburg junction, and the southern run into Munich. The Sparpreis depends on the quota of the individual train, and a through Sparpreis needs open quota on all three sections at once. Once the cheapest fare tier is gone on any one of them, the total jumps to the next tier.
Splitting at Frankfurt Airport long-distance station or at Mannheim turns the journey into two Sparpreis tickets, each with the quota of its own section. You stay on the same train.
Because two routes compete here, sometimes the other route is cheaper than any split. The search checks both.
Tips for this route
- Many trains on both routes call at Frankfurt Airport long-distance station, so on many connections the journey can be split there.
- If you're flexible about where you board, check Köln Messe/Deutz or Bonn. A ticket from there can land in a different fare tier than one from Köln Hbf.
- The route is far too long for the Deutschlandticket, at over 10 hours on regional trains. It is only useful for getting to the station.
